A week in Raw

So my good friend and fellow health enthusiast Kristin has inspired me to eat raw with her for a week... or two.  Or who knows how long we can make it.  See she's been on the road for a few months doing baller away / audition rotations and rocking them.  But that also means not necessarily ideal kitchens and food options.  This is also the friend I was training for the marathon with, yet neither of us ran it.  Lame.  Half ironman in the spring???!!!  I developed a stress fracture (fml) and she was just not here basically.  It was a true delight having some companionship on long runs though :)

So for the raw food issue on hand.  Starting with we are also allowing olive oil, vinegars, almond milk, protein powder, and coffee / tea.  ER rotation with shifts around the clock, everyone has a vice.

Keeping it colorful
So I stopped in at Stanley's last night to prepare for my first 4-5 days in fresh produce.  My cabinet is also stocked with raw almonds and my freezer has a few fresh frozen sashimi grade ahi tuna steaks ready for the week.  Yummmmm

pineapple, grapes, crimini mushrooms, spinach

mmmmmmore fruit!

farmstand apples!

Just because we're eating raw to detox a bit should not by any means indicate our workout will be slacking.  I'm about to head to gym to meet my lovely amiga for a 30 minute spin and 30 min "ultimate abs" class followed by a swim before we head off to orientation for our new rotation. Tomorrow I'm thinking some running / rowing / swimming and booty work ;).  Wed:  NO WORK!!! :)  and looking like a 70 degree day.  You better bet there will be a 50+ mile ride going down.  Thurs: gym with K.  Fri: maybe a barre class and a run.

And pre-workout a "green" smoothie!   Frozen banana, protein, almond milk, spinach, and strawberries.  Kale is always a great option too!

A new toy

And a new hobby:  The Nikon D5100 :)

I have no idea what I'm doing with this camera hardly at all yet but then again I've only had it for 10 days.  Really loving it!

First Photo!

And second :)

So it's been almost 6 months: Blog revisited

So over the past 6 months minus a few days I've probably thought about updating this about... oh... 4 times.  And all those were simply a fleeting thought.  But here I am now finally typing a little something in.  Not so much at for any readers.  Because I know how popular this blog of mine is, hahahaha, but for myself.

I turned 26 on September 5th.  GASP!  Actually a huge year in my life.  I will become a DOCTOR this year.  OMGoodness.  My lifelong goal accomplished, kind of.  There is still the whole interview, match, and residency process.  But it is near impossible for me to fail at getting the degree bare minimum.  That's craziness in my mind but rocking at the same time.  I have a feeling that after I cross that stage I'll be the same person as before though, just with access to a DEA number ;)

So I decided I needed more in my 26th year of life, because graduation medical school isn't enough.  Those that know me, and those that don't know me well at all know I really care a lot about health and fitness though never once in my life evidenced my the tone in my lower abs (or lack there of).  Ok so my goal is not to get lower abs as I joke about regularly but rather to make some healthy changes throughout the year.  1 every month that will continue to my best ability the rest of the year.  Certainly easier than piling them all on at once.  Also of note, I'm attempting not to make these all my typical "run a marathon" things.  I haven't set them all out yet (suggestions welcome) but here we go...

September 5 (happy birthday to me!):  Give up Diet Coke  (again):  Third times the charm.  So far so good here.  I've only craved one about 3 times in OVER a month :)

October 5:  Drink Tea daily:  Green Tea specifically.  So far so good (day 3...)

November 5:  Stretch!  Gosh my flexibility blows.  That means a weekly Yoga class as well (still sculpt duh).  Maybe I'm just justifying spending the money of my favorite CPY classes :)

December 5: Journal daily even for just 5 minutes.  Everyday write down a blessing.  The Holiday season seams the place for this.  Maybe even for this month I'll post 'em

January 5:  No eating of any form of processed food (except etOH when out) after 8:30 pm.  I have a nasty habit of snacking on kashi cereal later than I should.... And i wonder where my lower abs are hiding

That's 5 months.  Somewhat flexible but you get the picture :)  It takes 20 - 30 days to form a habit, seems like the perfect plan

Also on the docket right now are some short little get back into fitness plans.  Not that im currently out of shape by any means but I had to take an 8 week hiatus from running and have really beat myself up about therefore skipping out on yesterdays Chicago Marathon.  Ive only been running again for 2 5/7 weeks and up to 8 miles total.  That distance only came out bc I really wanted a couple extra beers.  4 miles seems to be my serious huff and puff mark.  Ouch.  But really for slacking in hitting the gym to weight train running muscles and not running a step even once, not even to catch a bus, thats not half bad.  So here's my week post marathon I spent $150 on but did not run

Sun:  lay in bed, pout, read, wait for all marathon cheers to clear, run 6.5 miles, lay in bed and mope, continue my process of cleaning out my apartment / de-cluttering
Mon:  granola bar, spin, protein pancake + berries, work/salad/work, red grapes and butternut squash soup (homemade delish duh), Run 25 min then to Barre, spaghetti squash dinner
Tues: Cardio Barre (I'm already thinking FML as I type this 1 1/2 hours after Barre tonight) then protein shake, work, spaghetti squash lunch, work, Ballet Body Bootcamp, Salmon and Green beans, Small Group??? (I really should go I don't know what my issue of not wanting to attend is the past few weeks)
Wed:  Spin, protein shake, walk to work, work, grk yogurt and fruit / kashi, OM lab, Salad out for dinner, Climb
Thurs: Cardio Barre,  protein shake, work, salad, work, Ballet Body bootcamp, Spin, Acorn Squash and edemame for dinner
Fri:  Spin, protein walk to work, OFF AT NOON!!!!!!!  Eggwhite omelet, Run
Sat:  Protein Pancake, Barre, Spin Shred
Sun:  Active recovery :)  Long walk, hoping no rain, maybe to Starved Rock.  Or swim, yoga???

Ok so now that's in print and about to be published online for any and all to potentially see.  Accountability is up!  And that means I'm taking a nyquil for my illness and off to bed very shortly.

Part of this new rehab plan also burst out of my visit with KS, SOOOOO good to see my workout buddy after almost 2 months!  We were discussing our lack of running the marathon and then how we want to get back on track.  We actually have the same rotation starting two weeks just always different shifts.  So we were thinking of starting it off by going Raw for a week.  This will be painful for me but well worth a shot.  As long as I am able to fudge it a little by giving myself leeway with rice protein powder in my smoothie in the morning, and almond milk and coffee in the mix.  I'd like to add Greek Yogurt in there too but that's cheating and dairy def throws off the plan.  Oh boy.

Also discussing a half iron man for the spring, (yeah I know I said no crazy goals like that but this is not a goal per se).  Any takers?  Virgin Island in May????!!!! :)

future?

Today is one of those days where after spending nearly $900 on testing fees and review materials (nope not done yet and there has already been about 1400 spent) and increasing my 8.5% interest loans by $5000 and hating my family medicine rotation that I have no real direction in life.  Sure sure next come's the common phrase from anyone outside of medicine "but you're going to be a doctor....."  and "doctors make a lot of money"  Please take a long look at the healthcare bill, malpractice, the cost of tuition, the average hours worked, and the pay during residency and get back to me.  (Not to mention the process of getting to the status of "attending".   I will say margaritas and tacos with a fellow mwu student did relieve some stress tonight and I'm very thankful for that.  Also, god bless groupon.

October 7, 2012

As Chicago marathon entry is now almost full I feel like its about time to post this.  Registration officially opened Wednesday the first at noon and as of now I'd guess there are less than 5000 spots open out of the origial 45000.  Yikes.  Well, I was lucky enough to not have to deal with the busy server on Wednesday afternoon (Chicago Endurance mag was predicting the race to sell out on the 1st) and I knew that registering while at work would be a pain in the @$$.  My run club (Fleetfeet) was kind enough to set up a special early registration night with a fun run, snacks, and a couple olympians in attendance.  6:30 on Jan 31st I was registered with a confirmation email  YAYYYY!!!!!!  I'm so excited and was really inspired at all the athletes out that night.

Can't wait for October and the runs I have ahead of me with my lovely girlfriends Kristin and April.

Still deciding if I'm running with a charity.  World Vision Park church team vs St. Jude? hmmmm .....

The best Shit ____ say video

"I hate stairs and ski boots"... "ugh my toes"... "are those next years goggles?"

Followed closely by...
"I was just riding along" "I need to lose 5 lb before I start racing" "Do you have this in carbon?"

sorry for just the video posts here.  But I can't get over this theme of videos, too good :)
(the sorority girl one isn't half bad either)

for educational reading though instead of just idiot (but true) sports lines check this out.  I now have a reference for every individual who tells me... "but you're going to be a doctor, you'll be rich"  Glad this individual took the time to calculate this all out for me!  I could say soooooo much, but won't.

"We're becoming the men we wanted to marry" -- Gloria Steinem

All the Single Ladies
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/11/all-the-single-ladies/8654/?single_page=true

Recent years have seen an explosion of male joblessness and a steep decline in men’s life prospects that have disrupted the “romantic market” in ways that narrow a marriage-minded woman’s options: increasingly, her choice is between deadbeats (whose numbers are rising) and playboys (whose power is growing). But this strange state of affairs also presents an opportunity: as the economy evolves, it’s time to embrace new ideas about romance and family—and to acknowledge the end of “traditional” marriage as society’s highest ideal

Brilliant!

Long article, but good read.  So much I could reply to but no time tonight.  Just wanted to quick share this, Maybe I'll find a chance to expound a bit in the coming days :)
